The Health Care Foundation and Eastern Health Reopen a Revitalized LeMarchant House

St. John’s, NL - The Health Care Foundation in partnership with Eastern Health celebrated the reopening of LeMarchant House today, a community-based mental health centre in St. John’s. The facility underwent extensive renovations thanks to the donation of $250,000 from the Health Care Foundation.

“The Health Care Foundation’s goal was to support Eastern Health in transforming LeMarchant House into a therapeutic and welcoming environment for clients,” said Debbie Patten, Chair of the Health Care Foundation’s Board of Directors. “Our physical environment plays a major role in the overall care experience, and thanks to our supporters, clients now have access to the care they need in a modern, beautiful building where they will feel comfortable and safe.”

LeMarchant House provides counselling services for adults with mental health concerns and/or mental illness. The multidisciplinary team offers individual, couple, family and group therapy. The facility was temporarily closed in December 2014 to accommodate extensive renovations. During renovations, services were temporarily moved to other facilities within Eastern Health.

The new space has been completely transformed into a therapeutic, modern facility. Technology within the building has also been upgraded, including audio/visual capabilities, security features, the addition of a SMART board which is used for group therapy sessions and improved technology for the hearing impaired.

“Creating a secure and comfortable environment for our clients at LeMarchant House is extremely important to their recovery,” said David Diamond, President and CEO of Eastern Health. “Studies show the design of health care facilities can increase patient safety, remove patient stress, and improve medical outcomes. The newly-renovated LeMarchant House is a good example of incorporating design into treatment, and this generous donation has enabled us to offer the right kind of health care, at the right time – and in the right space.”

The redevelopment of the facility was made possible thanks to the planned legacy gift from the late Gary Rowe and proceeds from the Health Care Foundation’s Eleganza event, including a special donation from the Smiling Land Foundation to that event.

“From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the Estate of Gary Rowe, our loyal Eleganza supporters and the Smiling Land Foundation for supporting this important project,” added Ms. Patten.
