High Risk Birthing Unit

Funding from two of our special events in 2008 - Brunch with the Bags and Eleganza - is helping many women who require obstetrical and gynecologic care.  The High Risk Birthing Unit in the Womens Health Centre received a new operating room table and new anesthesia equipment, and the Gynecology Clinic purchased three colposcopes to assist in the diagnosis of cervical cancer.

"Dear Staff and Donors of the Health Care Foundation,

What a wonderful gift - two new operating tables!  Our old tables were more than thirty years old and should have been replaced some time ago.  One of the trends we are noticing today is the increase in obesity and that represents challenges when caring for these patients.  Pregnant patients who are obese are an even greater challenge.  When these patients require a Caesarian section we need a safe and secure operating room table to do this surgery.  The new tables can securely hold up to 1000 pounds and extend on the sides to accommodate patients.  They are also very easy to move up or down to accommodate the height of the operating physicians.  The nursing staff and physicians absolutely love the tables!  The anesthetists are very happy with the new anesthetic machines since one of our old ones was giving us some trouble.

I often wonder if you can truly appreciate how grateful we are for that type of equipment that we use everyday when we come to work.  On behalf of the staff that uses these operating rooms everyday - and their patients - I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart."
