Tri For Health 2011
A triathlon is an endurance event consisting of swimming, biking and running. It is the true test of an athlete's physical and mental strength. Sign up as an individual or a team and test your will, in support of a great cause: Mental Health
Prizes: Once again this year we will have a prize draw with some incredible prizes. For every $200 you raise you get a ballot for the draw so the more you raise the better chance you have of winning. Once again this year we will be giving away a brand new Cannondale Slice. There will be lots of other prizes too.
One in five of us will be affected by some form of mental illness or addiction in our lifetime!
You can help! Research tells us that exercise and physical activity help people who suffer from mental illness heal faster. Tri for Health supports programs that encourage people to get active by providing the right equipment, clothing and opportunities for people who suffer from mental illness or addictions to participate in physical activity.
Our goal is to raise $ 30,000 to support a variety of initiatives to support mental health and addictions programs offered through inpatient and outpatient programs at the Waterford Hospital.
The Waterford Hospital has many needs and receives limited funding. Money raised will assist in helping people who suffer from mental illness get active. Money will be spent on recreation programs and exercise equipment for people with mental illness. This is a part of a larger initiative to bring awareness to and help dispel the negative stigma associated with mental health and addictions related illnesses.
“Over the past two years we have had several patients who could not attend the walking program, could not go to the gym, could not go bike riding because they did not have proper footwear. They were wearing slippers, sneakers that were too small or too big and some patients had no sneakers what so ever. With money from Tri for Health we purchased Nike Sneakers for patients. They were very appreciative and it provided the opportunity for them to participate in comfort.”
