Canada has a rich military legacy that extends over many generations. This rich
history is a source of pride for Canadians. Each and every Canadian has some relative
who has served our country, protected our well being and fought for our right to
freedom. This is true even today, as many of us know of someone who is currently
serving active duty; whether it be a relative, friend, or friend of a friend. We have all
been touched in some way by Canada’s rich military commitment. It is our responsibility
to uphold the respect and tradition of remembrance for our military legacy, and those
who have served both in the past, and will continue to serve in the future.
In the spirit of respect and remembrance, the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle
Group will be holding their fifth annual ride in support of Newfoundland and Labrador’s
troops, as well as the Veterans at the LA Miller Centre Veterans Pavilion. This year
the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Group have joined with the Health Care
Foundation and the Harley Owners Group of Newfoundland to raise funds to support
the building of a wandering garden for the residents of the Veterans Pavilion. The goal
for this year is to raise $20,000 towards the development of the Jim Shields Memorial
Garden, to be located right outside the Veterans Pavilion.
This memorial garden will be specially designed for those veterans with disabilities and
those who are suffering from dementia. The wandering garden will create a safe and
tranquil environment for Veterans to enjoy the outdoors. The meditative garden will
offer safe walking space for Veterans, including those using wheelchairs or walkers.
There will be a central court for socialization, that will have seating, birdbaths and
feeders. There will also be a enabling horticulture Therapy Garden, with fully accessible
planters and gardens for all the Veterans to enjoy. The Jim Shields Memorial Garden will
provide contentment and joy for our veterans for years to come.
The Support the Troops Ride will be held September 17th, 2011. Registration will being
at 9am, and the opening ceremonies will commence at 10:00am at the Canadian Forces
Station, Drill Hall parking lot. The riders will be leaving the Canadian Forces Station
in Pleasantville, travelling to Holyrood, through CBS and then ending their ride at
the LA Miller Centre Veterans Pavilion. The highlight of the event will be the closing
ceremonies at 2pm, where the Veterans will have the opportunity to thank the sponsors
and the riders for their generous donation and support.
